Light Bulbs, Transformers, & Parts
by Kimberly Quang
plug itLighting parts and accessories is a diverse category of lighting related products designed to offer the homeowner or lighting professional new as well as replacement parts for indoor and outdoor lighting. Lighting accessories and parts for lighting fixtures may include the following categories of products:
Transformers

The heart and soul of a low voltage lighting job is the transformer. Every low voltage lighting project requires the use of a lighting accessory commonly called a power supply. Power supplies or transformers convert household electricity to a safe low voltage current such as 12 or 24 volts. Most outdoor low voltage lights operate at 12 volts and are homeowner friendly when it comes to running wires, handling electricity and installing the lights.

Light Bulbs

Xenon, incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, metal halide, mercury vapor, halogen, fluorescent and high pressure sodium. We carry a wide selection from light bulbs and lamps from popular manufacturers such as Westinghouse, Eye, THHC, GE and Sylvania.

Sockets

Time Clocks & Photocells

Time clocks and photocells are the electrical devices that turn your lighting on an off either at a specific time or by dusk to dawn. Time clocks are a valuable part and accessory to any lighting job and come in both indoor models and outdoor models. A SPST rated time clock stands for single throw, single throw and is for single 120 volt 40 amp circuits. A DPDT rated time clock stands for double throw, double throw is for two 220 volt 40 amp circuits. Photocells, another accessory and lighting part, are available in 500 watt, 1500 watt and 3000 watt models. They should not be mounted in a dark area as they require the full sun to properly operate.

Lighting Contactors

Lighting contactors from Square D Corporation are special lighting accessories that handle lighting or electrical loads that exceed the capacity of switches, time clocks or photocells. A coil is energized by any incoming current that in turn closes the contactor switches allowing the higher current to pass through the device. This lighting part and accessory is very handy when you would like one switch, timeclock or photocell to turn on a large quantity of lights or electrical load from one location. Contactors come in a variety of configurations such as 12 volt, 24 volt, 120 volt, 208 volt, 240 volt, 277 volt and 480 volt coils with virtually unlimited secondary contact enclosures to handle just about any load.

We have UF cable and Landscape cable designed for direct burial or for surface mount applications where a UV protected wire is required. SJTO cable is designed for tree lighting applications and is used by landscape lighting professionals for moonlighting and tree lighting. Romex wire, an indoor wire is good for running switch legs out of the house or for bringing dedicated circuits from the panel. Wire, whether rated for indoor use or wire designed for landscape lighting is a fundamental component of any lighting job and a major lighting part and accessory.

Introduction to Telecom transformers : Transformer Toy and Game store

Introduction to Telecom transformers
by monish
plug itThe applications that demand high bandwidths and fast switching speeds Telecom transformers are utilized. It is used to isolates the signal between primary and secondary windings. There are several types of telecom transformers normally used. Few of transformer options include DSL , xDSL , E1 , T1 , ISDN , LAN , WAN & ATM transformer models. A lot of Modern transformers are also available. A DSL or xDSL transformer uses the digital subscriber loop (DSL) or extended digital subscribe loop (xDSL) for telecommunication protocols (Broadband). A T1 or E1 type of transformer is designed to use along with a T1 line or an E1 line. An ISDN type of transformer is the usual telecommunications transformer used for integrated tele-services digital network (ISDN), ISDN is an international standard for the digital transmission of voice and data. A LAN type of transformer is designed for use in a local area network (LAN), while a WAN type is used in a wide area network (WAN). An ATM type of transformer works with asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).
Performance specifications for any telecom transformers include the range of operating frequency, direct current resistance, insertion loss, high potential (hipot) level, 3-decibel (dB) bandwidth, operating temperature, and maximum dimension.

Direct current resistance or commonly known as DCR is the resistance of the telecom transformer's winding as measured with DC current. It is commonly specified as a maximum rating. Insertion loss is the measured loss through the device excluding the power division factor. It is measured in dB and calculated as the ratio of output power to input power. HIPOT level is the maximum voltage a telecom transformer can take without breaking the winding. 3 dB bandwidth is the frequency range.

Telecom transformers usually differ in terms of package type and method of packing. Integrated circuit (IC) package types include flat pack, single in-line package, dual in-line package, and small outline integrated circuit.

Board-level telecom transformers can employ either surface mounted technology or through hole technology. SMT adds components to a PCB by soldering component leads on to the top surface of the board. Through-hole technology fixes the components by inserting leads through holes and then soldering the leads in place on the other side of the board.

Outdoor Lighting Transformers : Transformer Toy and Game store

Outdoor Lighting Transformers
by Kimberly Quang
plug itOutdoor lighting transformers allow for the creation and installation of low voltage lighting systems. They efficiently and safely convert line voltage (120V current) to low voltage (12V current. By reducing power consumption in this manner, outdoor lighting transformers eliminate the risk of electrical shock to children and pets, and they reduce electrical usage and subsequently help generate reduced power costs. Outdoor lighting transformers are a favored accessory applauded by residential and commercial clients alike because they allow lighting systems to stay on all night and automatically shut lighting systems off when the sun rises. When looking through our impressive selection today, pay careful attention to a number of key features that distinguish Residential Landscape Lighting's outdoor transformers as superior, commercial grade units capable of powering any lighting system designed for commercial or residential outdoor lighting.
Our selection of outdoor lighting transformers consists primarily of magnetic devices. Magnetic units are adequate for tasks where the actual size of the transformer does not have to exactly correlate to the wattage of the fixtures being used. Because many RLLD clients are landscaping and lighting design companies seeking equipment with which to serve their clientele, we categorize our inventory by wattage capacity to make purchasing a quick and simple process. Residential clients looking to light their own home landscapes can determine the required wattage in their order by following the same simple rule of thumb that commercial clients of RLLD follow in choosing transformers for outdoor lighting. The transformer's wattage should total the sum of the wattage of all attached fixtures and accessories. We have several outdoor lighting transformers designed for both new systems and retrofitted upgrades to existing systems. Many of these outdoor transformers control lighting systems with photometric timers. These timers sense when dawn begins to break and power off the landscape lights as a result. To protect vital components from elemental forces, outdoor lighting transformers are also made from very durable materials such as heavy extruded aluminum housing, and rain-tight enclosures to ensure a long life and to operate safely at high temperatures.

Only in the case of certain decorative pieces like outdoor wall sconces and hanging outdoor pendant lanterns does one need the more advanced capabilities of electronic outdoor lighting transformer. RLLD has a growing selection of these models, and they represent the cutting edge of transformer technology in the world of outdoor lighting. They combine housings that are high temperature rated in lightweight and compact designs. They also work equally well in new or retrofit applications and manufactured with electronic short circuit and overload protection built into their designs. They are moisture and shock resistant too, and they consistently perform at 95% efficiency regardless of surrounding weather conditions.

Virtually any business or individual benefits receives many great benefits from a complete or hybrid low voltage outdoor lighting system. "Pure" line voltage systems are usually only necessary for exceptionally bright lighting such as that found in commercial security support. Low voltage systems actually provide superior decorative light in many cases because they are less intense. The opportunity for special effects and layered lighting techniques increases dramatically if one installs a low voltage outdoor lighting system or a transformer that adds a low voltage segment to an existing landscape design. It is never a bad thing for any business or individual to save money with such a conversion to low voltage lighting. Investing in a low voltage lighting system can accrue immediate savings on every subsequent power bill. In some parts of the country as well, certain businesses in remote or environmentally sensitive areas are governed by strict environmental laws regarding pollution and hazards to wildlife. Having a low voltage lighting system that will not harm animals can conceivably prevent penalties and liabilities, and even help a company's public relations. Some commercial insurance providers may also be willing to adjust rates favorably for clients on the basis that outdoor lighting transformers and low voltage outdoor lights represents a very significant and reliable reduction of fire hazard. RLLD does not guarantee this, of course, but we do recommend at least looking into the possibility.

Transformers Toys - Learn About These Popular Toys : Transformer Toy and Game store

Transformers Toys - Learn About These Popular Toys
by Paul Zayer
plug itIt is interesting to see how every generation has it's own special toys that can define it. My brother had two obsessions when he was a boy. He loved his Transformers toys and he loved the He-Man series. He had both of them in many versions, and he played with them all the time. It was hard for him to play by himself though, so I tried to play with him. I suspect that he didn't have much fun with me because I wasn't a huge fan of either one. I didn't know a lot about the toys so I really didn't know what I was doing. But my brother really loved them and on a rainy day, he could easily spend hours playing with his toys by himself.
It was a lot of fun for me to play with his Transformer Toys though. It was fun to watch how they work as they change from one thing to the other. They were quite intriguing. These Transformers toys that he had were the ones that he saw on the weekly cartoon. They were for the most part cars and trucks that turned into other things, but there were all kinds of transformers you could buy. Some of those transformers toys were expensive, and he knew he couldn't have every single one of them that he wanted.

I have seen lately that Transformers toys are returning on the market, but not at the level they were when my brother was crazy about them. I don't know if they have a new cartoon or not, but there must be some way that children are getting interested if the Transformers toys are making a comeback. Once a cartoon is successful, the toys will soon follow. Though I didn't realize it when I was a kid, it seems that if you can get a cartoon made that kids will love you are almost guaranteed success in merchandise.

If you look in your attic and find some of the older Transformers toys, you may want to get them out to give to your kids. They will love the older ones, but you will probably have to offer them the newer ones that you can find on the market if that is something they are into. You could also sell the old Transformers toys, if you don't have children, to those who are now collecting them because they loved them as a child. Some people strongly remember the toys they had when they were young, and they are looking to buy them somewhere and bring them back home for them of for their kids.

Step Up Transformers : Transformer Toy and Game Store

Step Up Transformers
by Kimberly Quang
plug itUnlike step down transformers which will lower high voltage incoming current to a more energy efficient and safer low voltage like landscape lighting transformers, step up transformers act in the opposite manner. Their task is to take low voltage in their input, and convert it to a higher voltage in their output. The currents that flow through the transformer will act in an inverse way. The low current, high voltage is coming into the step up transformer and a high current, low voltage is the output. These have to be proportional to each other since multiplied together, you can find the power flowing through. Transformers do not create power, though, and they must conserve whatever is flowing through them to be efficient. This is why there is the inverse relation between the current and voltage of the input and output of the transformer.
One of the common uses of step up transformers is their use by travelers to the United States from Asian or Europe where the electrical outlets have an output of 220V. In America the typical outlet has a voltage of 120V. This means that these wayfayers will have to use a transformer to convert the amount of voltage from the 120V outlet to power their electrical devices which require 220V. If you are an American traveler going abroad, you will need a step down transformer if you want to operate American appliances.

Step up transformers are also used in applications where the device connected requires more than the typical 120V outlet. This could be anything such as outdoor lighting. In order to decide which transformer is best for your project, keep in mind that step up transformer cannot create more power. This means that you should add up the power - measured either in volt-amperes (VA) or Watts - of all the devices you intend to connect. You should also plan for some extra space in their to accommodate future project additions. You do not want to encounter a blown transformer in the future because you add a light or two. Keep in mind that over long distances, the voltage of each successive device will be lower, and you could easily encounter problems by overloading the transformer. When you are wiring your step up transformer the high voltage outgoing wires will connect to the the H1 and H2 wires of the transformer. The low voltage incoming will be tied to the X1 and X2 wires. It will be simple if you just remember that the high voltage starts with an H and it will connect to the H wires in the transformer. The Xs are for the low voltage input.

If you are unclear as to whether or not you need a transformer or what kind, then you need to ask an expert. Consulting with a professional electrical contractor will save you the costs of accidents and damage from improper installation of your project. Should you feel that you can install it yourself, but just need some guidance, there are many places to find expert tips and advice to help answer any of your step up transformer questions.

Importance of Wires used in Transformers : Transf ormer Toy and Game Store

Importance of Wires used in Transformers
by monish
plug itThe wire used is usually are magnet wire. Magnet wire is a copper wire with a fleecing of varnish or some other artificial coating. Transformers for years have utilized Form wire, which is a lacquered type of magnet wire.
The conducting substance used for the winding depends upon the purpose. Diminutive power and signal transformers are wound with solid copper wire, shielded usually with enamel, and sometimes supplementary insulations. Superior power transformers may be wound with wire, copper, or aluminum rectangular conductors. Strip conductors are utilized for very grave currents. High rate of recurrence transformers operating in the 10’s to 100’s of kHz will have windings of wire to minimize the skin consequence losses in the conductors.

Large power transformers use multiple-trussed conductors as well, since still at low power frequencies non-identical distribution of current would otherwise subsist in high-current windings. Each string is shielded from the other, and the strands are assembled so that at definite points in the winding each portion occupies different next of kin positions in the complete conductor. This "transposition" balances the current flowing in each strand of the conductor, and lessens eddy current losses in the winding itself. The stranded conductor is also more elastic than a solid conductor of comparable size is.

For signal transformers, the windings may be positioned in a way to minimize seepage inductance and wander off capacitance to improve high-frequency reaction. This can be done by dividing up each coil into segments, and those segments placed in layers between the sections of the additional winding. This is known as a heaped type or interleaved winding.

To make the fundamental single-phase transformer more adaptable, both the primary and secondary windings can be prepared in 2 identical parts. The 2 parts can be reconnected either in a series or in parallel. This gives added flexibility as the primary winding can be switched for either 480 volts or 240 volts and the secondary winding can similarly be segregated into 2 equal parts providing either 120 or 240 volts. Either array will not affect the competence of the transformer. Secondary windings are charged with a slant such as 120/240 and can be attached in a series for 240V or in a parallel for 120V or 240/120V .Primary windings rated with ‘X’ such as 240 X 480 can function in series or parallel but are not intended for 3-wire operation. A transformer rated 240 X 480 primary, 120/240 secondary could be maneuvered in six varying combinations.
